Frequently asked questions about Top Gear and The Grand Tour gifts

What's the difference between Top Gear and The Grand Tour?

Top Gear is the BBC's long-running motoring magazine show, hosted by Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May from 2003 to 2015 (the same trio whose reinvention of the format in those years made it Britain's biggest factual TV export). The Grand Tour is the same three presenters' Amazon Prime continuation, which started in 2016. Both have huge fan bases and very similar gift profiles — books, box sets, merchandise — which is why this page covers them together.

When did Clarkson, Hammond and May leave Top Gear?

Jeremy Clarkson left Top Gear in March 2015 after his BBC contract was not renewed. Richard Hammond and James May chose to leave shortly afterwards, and the three signed a deal with Amazon Prime to launch The Grand Tour in November 2016. Top Gear has continued on the BBC with several different presenter line-ups since.

What is The Grand Tour Presents?

The Grand Tour Presents is the format the show settled into from 2019 onwards: feature-length one-off specials filmed in a single country or region, rather than the studio-and-films magazine format of the early Amazon series. Specials filmed in Mongolia, Madagascar, Norway and elsewhere are sold individually on disc and are firm gift favourites.

Are the Top Gear DVD box sets still being made?

Yes — the BBC continues to release new compilations, but the most-loved sets are the Clarkson/Hammond/May era series box sets and the standalone specials (Polar, Africa, Vietnam, Patagonia, India). They surface on Amazon UK throughout the year, though stock comes and goes; if you spot the one you want at a sensible price, grab it.

Who writes the books on this page?

The big-name books are usually by Clarkson, Hammond or May themselves — Clarkson's column collections, Hammond's accounts of his crash recovery, and May's deceptively dry pop-science volumes. Top Gear annuals and the official coffee-table books are produced under the Top Gear brand by BBC Books and Ebury.

What about the Stig?

The Stig has had several incarnations and, very famously, never speaks. There are die-cast Stig figures, Stig keyrings, Stig mugs and even Stig-themed Lego compatible builds — all of which work as light-hearted gifts for someone who's been watching since the Black Stig era.

Will these items arrive in time for Christmas?

All items on this page are sold and shipped by Amazon.co.uk — UK Prime delivery is fast, but boxed sets and limited-print books can sell out late in the season. The page is refreshed monthly to keep stock-status accurate, but for December gifts we'd suggest ordering by mid-December at the latest.
