If your birthday falls on or near Christmas Day, the festive season can swallow your celebrations whole. The cards arrive in red envelopes, the presents come wrapped in robins, and the cake competes with the Christmas pudding for table space.
Here is the borrowed-from-the-monarch trick that solves it: like the King with the Trooping the Colour parade in June, give the birthday person an Official Birthday on a different date — most British families use 25 June (a half-birthday) or the August Bank Holiday. The 25 December itself still gets a proper cake, candles and two separate cards. The big party — friends, venue, photos — happens in the summer when everyone is available and the weather plays along.
