Reaction to the 2018 John Lewis Christmas Advert #Christmas

As ever lots of us have been waiting for the last few weeks to see what John Lewis would come up with this year for their Christmas Advert. All was revealed yesterday morning (Thursday 15th November 2018) when they released their Elton John life story advert.

John Lewis Elton John Christmas Advert

If you haven’t seen it already then, here’s a link to it on YouTube.

In summary the advert is about how receiving a Piano for Christmas from his mum and gran, was more than a gift and set the direction he would follow for the rest of his life.  My initial initial thought on watching it for the first time is I wonder if John Lewis actually sell Piano’s as I can’t recall ever seeing one in their stores and I wouldn’t know which department to find one in. Wouldn’t it be great if they had a musical instruments department, provided lessons and ran events in store, somethimg along the lines of what Apple are doing with ‘Today at Apple’.

Anyway, the most intesrting thing for me this year is how other retailers embraced this event and joined in the fun.

Iceland Christmas 2018 Advert Banned from TV #Christmas

The Christmas 2018 Iceland Foods Christmas TV advert as not approved to be shown on TV this year. From my understanding, it’s because Iceland produced the TV advert in partnership with Greenpeace. The body that approves TV Adverts in the UK will not approve adverts which are political in nature and apparently they thought that with the Greenpeace connection made this political.

The advert highlights the need to ban palm oil from products because it has led to large-scale deforestation of rainforests and the destruction of the natural habitat and ecosystem for numerous species.

You would like to think that the people who approve these adverts would be able to apply a little common sense when interpreting the rules. However in being ‘banned’ they have given this advert far more exposure than I’m sure Iceland could have afforded via TV adverts alone.

Numerous other retailers not wishing to be caught out now on the dirty palm oil issue have come out in support of the Iceland campaign. Perhaps my favourite over the weekend was the news that Selfridges would be stocking Iceland’s Palm Oil free mince pies in their stores this Christmas.

If you haven’t seen the video yet do click on the youtube video above and watch it to show your support for this important issue.

First look at the Next Christmas Catalogue 2018 #Christmas #Next

The Christmas Next Catalogue arrived at the end of last week.

Next Christmas Catalouge 2018

The front cover say “new Collection Christmas ’18 Free Copy’. It has a few silver stars, but little else to set it apart from any other autumn publication. The font used for Christmas ’18 is a little unusual choice these days, reminding me a little too much of Comic Sans.

Next Christmas Catalouge 2018

The back cover says “Order by 12 midnight for next day delivery, to home for £3.99 or free to store”. That’s still a really amazing service.

Next Christmas Catalouge 2018

Inside they have some lovely Christmas decoration pages. I’ll try and pick a few items I like over the next few weeks and write about them in future blogs.
